Matthew Barber is a graduate student in VCU’s Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling program pursuing his LPC licensure and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) credential, and has been with River City Comprehensive Counseling Services for nearly a year. His clinical activities include facilitating group therapy sessions, outpatient counseling, care coordination, and active learning.

Matthew’s interest in substance use counseling naturally arose from a lifelong fascination with psychoactive drugs and humanistic psychology. Matthew practices a person-centered approach focusing on client strengths, and the profound healing power of a genuine, authentic relationship between clients and clinicians.

Matthew is a passionate and nonjudgmental advocate in helping people struggling with addiction, as well as general mental health concerns. Learning from the lived experiences of clients, Matthew finds this work to be a humbling and enriching experience.
