Karen Melcho has been working in the field of addiction and recovery for over 6 years. Karen received her BA from Virginia Commonwealth University, majoring in English and minoring in Religious Studies and Creative Writing. In 2023, Karen received her MS in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling with a focus on substance use disorders. Karen is currently in supervision through the Virginia Board of Counseling for her Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) certification and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) residency. She has been a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) since 2018. Before joining River City, Karen worked with clients struggling with substance use disorders and mental health challenges in criminal justice, recovery community organization, and medication assisted treatment (MAT) settings.

Karen has a passion for life-long learning and applies her background in philosophy, creativity, and spirituality to her clinical theoretical framework. She practices a mix of modalities undergirded by a holistic approach to mind, body, and spirit. Understanding that each person is an unique individual, Karen collaborates with her clients to assist them in their personal goals. She is an advocate for recovery supports and human dignity.

Karen is a full-time dog lover, part-time yogi, and enjoys travel.
